OKLAHOMA CITY, U.S.A−Our sense of humor may say a lot about our personality. The way you crack jokes at or with others could indicate who you are and how you relate to others. Dr. Rod A. Martin, professor and specialist in Clinical Psychology at the University of Western Ontario, found out that humor is a double-edged sword.
Dr. Martin thinks that humor can help you both build better relationships and cope with life. However, it can also be corrosive and eating away at your self-esteem and antagonizing others around you.
Your sense of humor, according to Dr. Martin, says who you are:
The put-down: This type of jokester would crack jokes at others in order to embarrass them, which will create an animosity between the two sides. This aggressive way of humor can affect hugely relationships. By doing so, this person feels good when he makes others look bad, clumsy, embarrassed.
Hate-me jokes. This type of humor revolves around you the jokester, where you you’re the butt of the joke for the amusement of others. We all encounter people who enjoy making fun at themselves. Constantly humiliating yourself can both erode your self-respect and lead to depression.
Laughing at life: Dr. Martin describes this type of humor as the best because by doing so, laughing at life absurdities, it helps you cope with challenges and stress. For example, you drop a cup of tea and instead of hitting the floor, you laugh it off. This is another way of stress relief.
