California, U.S.A— The Argentine attacker and soccer superstar Lioenl Messi signed a new deal on Thursday with FC Barcelona, which extends his stay at the club until 2018.
The contract with FC Barcelona signing ceremony was attended by the Messi, President Sandro Rosell, Vice-President Josep Maria Bartomeu and the Director of Football Andoni Zubizarreta, Barcelone website reported.
Messi joined the Club when he was 13 years old and made his first-team debut three years later. He will be 31 when his contract expires.
“I want to continue playing football for Barça”, Messi said.
“I’m very happy at Barcelona, I’ve always said that. It’s a fantastic day … I don’t know how I’ll be when I’m 31. I take it one day at a time and I want to continue playing football for Barça”, he added after he signed his contract with Barça.
Messi is Barca’s leading scorer of all time, racking up a calendar year record 91 goals for club and country in 2012.
Messi’s contract came after the ones of club stalwarts Xavi and Carles Puyol, both of whom signed their extensions last month.
